MORPHOSIS

Welcome to MORPHOSIS, an exploration of transition between states of being.

The process of change is present in everything: the plants in our backyard, the moths in our closet, the lint in our belly buttons, the weather, the seasons, our bodies, our personalities, our mindsets, our relationships, our governments, our culture, our species, the solar system, etc, etc, etc.

Change is an elusive entity, constantly shifting experience in unexplainable ways. Our view of change seems to significantly alter its effect on us.

It seems that for something to become new, its previous form must be relinquished. This exhibit asks the questions,

“What would it be like to come undone?

Who might I become?

Will I grieve that which is left behind?”

This exhibit is heavily inspired by the artist’s personal experience in “goo mode”- the place where one thing has finished and the next thing has yet to begin. She writes,

“I may never be a fully developed artist. I am only ever the artist that I am, always developing. My art style is constantly changing, each piece I make is unique and up for re-evaluation- sometimes I go so far as to paint over a beloved old work to create an entirely different painting.

While I prefer to hide my work from outside eyes, I am sharing my art today because I am working on accepting that there is no other moment that it will be more perfect in, it is worth sharing just as it is.”

While always uncertain, and often uncomfortable and frightening, goo mode can teach us to relax into the completeness of being incomplete, and to practice playful curiosity about being a thing in constant transition.

Perhaps we are all perfectly imperfect in each moment, just as we are.
